Description
Every appearance by La Ribot is an event. In "Juana ficción", a piece created with the conductor Asier Puga, both dance and music empower a woman who has been held back.
La Ribot is a queen. In 'Juana ficción', she plays Joanna I of Castile, the rightful queen, ousted from power by her son, her father and her husband, and imprisoned for forty-six years after being declared insane. Since 1992, this is the second time La Ribot has chosen to portray Joanna I, and this time the choreographer has opted to dance outdoors, far from secluded spaces, at dusk. She is accompanied by the dancer and actor Juan Loriente, her long-time collaborator, and the highly acclaimed Asier Puga, conductor and artistic director of the Grupo Enigma ensemble from Zaragoza. The seven soloists of her ensemble, performing the contemporary score by Iñaki Estrada—which itself draws on Spanish musical motifs from the 15th and 16th centurie are joined by an electronic soundscape and the voices of a choir. The queen is grand, majestic, in vibrant, contemporary costumes. Jeanne, nicknamed ‘the madwoman’, is no longer so. The word ‘ficción’ in the title takes on its full meaning, as ‘ficción’ can mean both fiction and a lie. Ribot breathes life back into the queen before she disappears forever.
