Description
The Playground Festival, part of the Rencontres chorégraphiques internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis, is once again joining forces with the Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers for an evening of shared performances alongside the artists Pauline Tremblay and Suzanne Henry.
She burns
Suzanne Henry draws on a rage that courses through her – both a driving force and a shield, a way of asserting her place whilst also containing her vulnerability. From this tension emerges a searing first solo: an intense and committed physical journey, taken to the very brink of combustion.
Becoming Queen (or Queen B)
The analysis of Beyoncé’s music video *Run the World (Girls)* provides the choreographer with an opportunity to revisit her own journey as a feminist, as a woman born in the 1980s: from the adage ‘if you go out like that, you’ll get into a bit of trouble’, through the *Girls Power* of the Spice Girls, punk, academic feminism, the reappropriation of the ‘mal gaze’, dance tutorials on YouTube, #MeToo, her first dance lessons and her first bouts of lumbago. The choreographic, iconographic and socio-economic analysis of Beyoncé’s music video serves as a framework for retracing four decades of a quest for emancipation that has been more or less successful.
The boundaries between what is merely anecdotal and what constitutes ‘big history’ are blurring. With humour and self-deprecation, the performance highlights the paradoxes inherent in any individual or collective struggle. This performance is an invitation to give yourself permission, to try things out, and to invent yourself as an icon.
