Description
Lip Critic, a New York band with an unconventional line-up, blends punk, hardcore, club music and experimental pop. Their new album, *Theft World*, inspired by a fan who stole bank details, transforms this story into a quirky musical world.
Formed in 2018 in New York, Lip Critic is the project of Bret Kaser, Connor Kleitz, Daniel Eberle and Ilan Natter. The band comprises two samplers, two drummers and vocalists. Thanks to their non-traditional instrumentation, Lip Critic perform an eclectic mix of punk, hardcore, club and modernist pop sounds, with uninhibited structures. Combined with an eccentric, oratorical vocal style, Lip Critic delivers a particularly engaging live performance that rivals the hyper-stylised production of their records. These performances are heavily focused on improvisation and experimentation, including extended and remixed versions of songs, as well as band members attaching portable lights to their bodies.
Theft World, their new album, has been available since May 2026
Theft World is an album born out of a theft: the theft of my bank details by a fan who, convinced that our music concealed coded messages, thought he’d won a treasure hunt by stealing from me. One evening, whilst on tour, he recited my National Insurance number to me in front of the merch stall. Intrigued, I listened as he explained his far-fetched theory: according to him, our songs described a world populated by characters such as ‘the ATM Man’ or ‘the Casino-Supermarket’.
Back in the studio, our demos suddenly seemed bland. His interpretation, though far-fetched, was far more captivating than our original intentions. So we abandoned the album we were working on to create Theft World — a work inspired by his vision, like an unwitting tribute to this thief who, without realising it, gave us a new artistic direction.
