As part of Multitude, the Seine-Saint-Denis Biennale, in partnership with Les Suds in Arles, Gnawa Diffusion is sharing the stage with Aïta Mon Amour for an evening blending ragga-chaâbi, hip-hop, Gnawa trance, rock and electronic poetry.
The Mediterranean Season is also taking place in Valbon! The Mediterranean Season is a cultural event held throughout France and also in Seine-Saint-Denis !
At Gnawa Diffusion, the band members come from different backgrounds, a little further out from the Mediterranean coast. Their journey seems to be a symbolic reflection of what immigrants in France have experienced. Gnawa Diffusion is the driving force behind getting the message of protest across.
Rap, ragga, reggae, jazz, raï – you’ll find it all at Gnawa Diffusion. Their musical skills, instrumentation, tastes and affinity for the sounds, emotions and meanings of youth have secured their music a prominent place on the global stage.
Aïta Mon Amour
This duo reinvents the Moroccan female oral tradition of aïta (a cry, a lament) for today’s audience. Widad Mjama’s intense, almost wild voice blends with the distorted riffs and electro-rock arrangements of Tunisian multi-instrumentalist Khalil Epi, enhanced by strings, percussion and a traditional choir, transforming this rural, ancestral art form into pure psychedelic energy !
