Come and admire this unusual 18th-century building that bears witness to Saint-Denis' textile industrial past.
In 1722, the Swiss Rodolphe Ebinger, a former worker at Oberkampf, the famous manufacturer of painted cloth in Jouy-en-Josas, set up an Indian factory on the banks of the Croult, a river in Saint-Denis.

The first cotton fabrics, painted or printed, were made in Asian India, hence the name "indiennes". Indian fabrics were first made in France in the early 18th century. Initially hand-painted, the fabrics were later printed using wax and then stencils. These cheaply printed cottons were well received in France, and the use of Indian fabrics spread to furniture.

The house known as the Maison des Arbalétriers in Saint-Denis is the building where the final stage in the manufacture of indiennes took place: drying. This large building, with its height and louvred shutters, has a characteristic structure for spreading and drying the indiennes.

Its name comes from a term used in carpentry: the crossbeams are sloping pieces of wood that project outwards, forming the overhang of the roof.

The building has been restored and is currently listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments.
