This program invites you on a journey to the heart of Wagnerian Romanticism. The Wesendonck Lieder, written to poems by Mathilde Wesendonck, Wagner's confidante and muse, offer five songs that already contain the themes that permeate Tristan and Isolde. Two of these lieder, which Wagner described as "studies for Tristan," directly foreshadow the suspended harmonies and chromatic surges of the famous Prelude and Isolde's Death. Placed side by side, the Prelude and Isolde's Death reveal the full maturity of this aesthetic.
Excerpts from Parsifal—the Prelude, the Good Friday Spell, and the Transformation Scene from Act III—show another stage in Wagner's musical evolution. Here, he explores a more refined and meditative atmosphere, where the spiritual quest takes over from Tristan's passionate torments.
This Wagnerian evening will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Lille National Orchestra under the baton of the young British conductor Alpesh Chauhan, Music Director of the Birmingham Opera Company and Principal Guest Conductor of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra.
It will also be an opportunity to hear the magnificent soprano Ingela Brimberg, who notably enjoyed great success in 2025 in the Ring Cycle at La Monnaie in Brussels. A great Wagnerian, she is particularly renowned for her role as Senta in The Flying Dutchman, in which she has been heard throughout the world.
