(Re)discover one of Puccini’s most famous operas on the big screen. It is a passionate, historical and cruel drama, elevated by music interspersed with moments of tenderness and pure poetry. Whether you’re an opera connoisseur or not, you’ll be utterly captivated !
To give herself to the man she hates in order to save the man she loves: such is the terrible bargain to which Police Chief Scarpia forces the singer Floria Tosca, who is in love with the painter Mario Cavaradossi. A dilemma set against the backdrop of the political situation in Rome in 1800, marked by the progressive aspirations of the republicans in opposition to monarchical power.
Originally a play by Victorien Sardou, Tosca became, upon its premiere in 1900, one of Giacomo Puccini’s most famous operas, eventually coming to symbolise the very essence of opera. At the height of his artistic maturity, the composer delivers a masterful score in which tension is palpable from the very first chords.
In his production, dominated by an immense cross, Pierre Audi highlights the relentless grip of the Church which, through its collusion with the authorities, crushes the characters’ destinies.
