43rd edition of the Banlieues Bleues jazz festival in Seine-Saint-Denis. Tonight's programme: Asmaa Hamzaoui & Bnat Timbouktou (Morocco), Maalem Houssam Guinia (Morocco) and Retro Cassetta (DJ set, Morocco)!
- In 2019, at just over twenty years of age, Asmaa Hamzaoui gave her first concert in France at the Dynamo de Banlieues Bleues. She returns today for the festival, accompanied once again by Bnat Timbouktou, the all-female group with whom she broke the mould in 2017 in Essaouira by entering a world traditionally reserved for men. Heir to the Gnawa masters and daughter of Rachid Hamzaoui, she has since been recognised as a maalema and has developed this ancestral music by incorporating influences and concerns specific to her generation.
- Maalem Houssam Guinia follows in the footsteps of his father, Mahmoud Guinia, a legendary figure in Gnawa music who passed away in 2015. As the heir to this art form, he uses his guembri and his voice to bring to life the painful history of his African slave ancestors, transforming it into a luminous and resilient force.
- Before travelling the world behind his turntables, Retro Cassetta already cultivated a deep passion for cassettes from the 80s and 90s. He collects and digitises thousands of them to preserve the analogue heritage of Morocco, Algeria and Libya, where this medium played a key role in the dissemination of music. Raï, chaâbi wave, rap, disco, rock, gnawa... His collection of 20,000 cassettes feeds into vibrant sets that blend rare gems and nostalgia, celebrating the rich soundscape of the Maghreb. An irresistible retro journey, ready to set the dance floor alight.
