One Christmas Eve, Clara receives a wooden puppet as a gift: a nutcracker. She falls asleep holding it close and plunges into a dream where toys and fears come to life. This fantastical tale, published in Berlin in 1816 by Hoffmann, an iconic figure of German Romanticism, inspired Marius Petipa to create his first choreographic version in 1892. In a world populated by tin soldiers, rats and giant dolls, a child's imagination is transformed into ballet.
Clara's luminous visions and nightmares come to life to Tchaikovsky's dazzling and colourful score. In 1985, Rudolf Nureyev revisited the work at the Paris Opera, enhancing the strangeness of the story with sumptuous sets and costumes. Snowflakes, flowers and fairy-tale landscapes provide the backdrop for a dazzling choreography. Guided by the puppet who has become a prince, Clara confronts her desires and fears on a journey of discovery.
