Just a few stops from Paris, another side of Greater Paris is revealed
We can see what you’re thinking: ‘Plaine Commune? Where’s that?’ And that’s exactly where it gets interesting.
Just a stone’s throw from Paris, to the north of the capital, Plaine Commune comprises eight towns, including Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, Aubervilliers and L’Île-Saint-Denis (yes, you don’t need to go to the Caribbean to have an island within your own borders).
It takes 15 minutes from Gare du Nord to Saint-Denis, 25 minutes from Châtelet, 20 minutes from Saint-Lazare, or 35 minutes from the major Parisian stations. The area is served by metro lines 7, 12, 13 and 14, the RER B, RER C and RER D,line H, tram lines T1, T5, T8 and T11, as well as an extensive bus network. Just a few stops are all it takes to change scenery.
Andyet there’s so much going on here! Here, an old factory becomes a creative hub, a wall is transformed into a work of art, a basilica tells the story of several centuries, and enthusiasts open the doors to places you’d never have imagined visiting.
Get off at Saint-Denis – Porte de Paris, the Basilica of Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen Town Hall, Saint-Ouen, the Popular Front, Aimé Césaire, Fort d’Aubervilliers, Aubervilliers Town Hall or La Courneuve – 8 May 1945… and prepare to be surprised.
Plaine Commune is the sort of place where you arrive with a few preconceptions… and leave with your head full of stories.
