
"Resist!" will be the theme of this 29th edition of the Festival Villes des Musiques du Monde, which will take place from October 10 to November 11. A festival that continues its journey through the territories and places of Seine-Saint-Denis and Paris.
From the chants of the Maroons in Colombia, like bullerengue, to the drums of Guadeloupean gwoka or the calypso of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, by way of the maloya of Réunion, Occitan struggle songs, or the marching bands and other Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans, music, songs, and dances are often the expression of social and cultural struggles. They become powerful levers of resistance, accompanying demands for freedom and recognition. In Tunisia, Egypt, and Syria, the "Arab Spring" was carried by songs. It is also Fela Kuti and his politically engaged Afrobeat; today, it is still hip-hop carrying the voice of the neighborhoods: rap is resisting...
