Through the programme entitled ‘Ay ! Amours…’, explore the delicate nuances of courtly love as expressed in the music and poetry of the 14th and 15th centuries! As part of ‘Medieval October’ at the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis.
The painful refrain ‘Ay! Amours’, which gives the programme its title, embodies a lament addressed to a loved one who does not return the love. This motif of romantic suffering, omnipresent in medieval poetry and music, was a central source of inspiration for composers and poets of the Middle Ages. Within the refined and codified framework of courtly love – marked by modesty, restraint and social conventions – all the nuances of desire and torment in love are nevertheless revealed.
Through this programme, the performers seek to convey the many facets of romantic love and to establish a sensitive dialogue between the musicians and the ancient texts. They recreate an intimate setting, conducive to confidences, secret exchanges and emotions shared between friends.
To this end, they have selected a collection of songs from France and Italy, dating from the 14th and early 15th centuries. This musical journey between two cultures reveals a great stylistic diversity: monodic pieces from the manuscript of the Roman de Fauvel, polyphonic works by Guillaume de Machaut, Johannes Ciconia, Guillaume Dufay and Gilles Binchois, as well as instrumental pieces that enrich this exploration of the subtleties of courtly love.
>>> Performers: Daniela Maltrain (bowed vielle, voice), Julia Marty (guiterne, voice), Nolwenn Tardy (bowed vielle).
